The Chu Family Foundation (TCFF)
Early Career Women in Science Fellowships
As always, ISAR would like to thank the Chu Family Foundation (TCFF) and Dr. David and Mrs. Jane Chu for supporting the Early Career Women in Science fellowships for both ISAR and our sister society, IS3NA. This year’s ISAR TCFF competition was quite stiff – there were nine highly competitive applicants, thus making judging extremely difficult, and particularly so for the top five applicants. As a result, there was a mathematical tie for third place and the TCFF committee ultimately selected four winners. As has been done in previously when there was a mathematical tie, the committee awarded the applicants who have tied $2,000 each, while the other two winners received $3,000 each. Two of the winners are postdocs – Dr. Bo Kyeong Yoon and Dr. Megan Gribble Lloyd, and two are PhD students – Mary Yates and Erofili Giannakopouli. The four winners are diverse in terms of country of origin, coming from Greece (one), Singapore (one) and the USA (two). All four had outstanding plans for using their funds to spend time in a collaborator’s laboratory to learn new skills, to attend a specific conference, or for two of our winners, to do both. |

Three of the four winners were present at ICAR and got a chance to tell the audience what they accomplish with their funds (Mary and Megan), or what they plan to do with them (Erofili). The three received their award plaques and had photos taken with the Chu’s. It was also a great opportunity to remind the audience to have their students and postdocs apply for this excellent award, which has already made a major difference for many of the previous Chu winners’ careers.
