ISAR APPRECIATES THE SERVICE TO THE SOCIETY OF JOANA ROCHE-PEREIRA, WHO HAS JUST COMPLETED HER TERM AS AN ELECTED MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The ISAR leadership underwent the periodic yearly renewal at the end of the virtual ICAR 2021,when Pei-Yong Shi and Joana Rocha-Pereira completed their two years of service as members of the Board of Directors. We would like to thank them very much for their service as members of the board in such a challenging times, and we are all look forward to their continuing involvement with the society.
ISAR has benefited greatly from Joana’s participation in the Board of Directors, and appreciate all the time and effort she has volunteered to the society while developing her exciting career. Joana has been recently appointed Assistant Professor at the Rega Institute (KU Leuven), in Leuven, Belgium. She obtained her PhD at the University of Porto (Portugal) in 2013. Her research focuses on understanding viral replication and identifying small molecule antivirals. To that end, she has established a collection of in vitro assays and small animal models of viral replication for human noroviruses, rotaviruses, bunyaviruses and more recently for COVID-19. Her attention recently turned to zebrafish as an exciting new model to study virus replication. She received two scientific prizes in recognition of her contribution to the antiviral field, the McGuigan Rising Star Award (Cardiff University, 2019) and the Astrazeneca Foundation Award for New discoveries in antiviral therapy (FWO/FNRS, 2020).
Joana is active member of ISAR since 2012, having served in multiple committees, the Board of Directors and by co-chairing the Abstract Review workgroup for ICAR. She is also an Associate Editor of the ISAR-sponsored journal Antiviral Chemistry & Chemotherapy, a Topic Editor for the journal Viruses and a Review Editor for Frontiers in Pharmacology and Frontiers in Virology.
